What matters in electric motors
-
Engine power and battery capacity (depending on speed and range)
-
Handling and flexibility (low weight, lithium battery)
-
Compatibility of components (especially motor and battery)
-
Special features (battery range indicator, waterproof box)
-
Additional accessories (safety bracelet, integrated battery)
Worth all inflatable boats with moderate driving behavior!
Currently, ePropulsion's outboard motors are popular due to their price-performance ratio, as well as the affordable motors from Haswing.

Cost of electric motor for inflatable boat
The table gives you an idea of the costs of a complete system. We assume an outboard motor with lithium batteries, as well as about 4-5 hours of continuous driving at moderate speed (not full throttle). The costs may vary depending on the manufacturer and technical solution.
We are open to different approaches and always ready to provide ideas to help you find the right solution.

What should I consider when buying an electric motor?
If you are currently looking for a new engine, you should at least consider an electric motor! If you are buying a new motor now, it should also be able to last or be used for the next 10 years.
Bans on combustion engines and economic efficiency are current topics. Important factors for the electric drive for the inflatable boat are:
When is an electric motor not suitable for an inflatable boat?
However, there are also applications where an electric motor is currently not suitable for the inflatable boat. For example, if you want to race across the lake with 30 or 50 horsepower on your inflatable boat.
The batteries of the electric motors are simply too large, heavy and expensive in relation to the inflatable boat. Although it is technically possible, it is not economical compared to a combustion engine.
Why are electric boats cheaper to maintain?
The purchase costs of electric motors are [currently] still significantly higher than those of combustion engines. Fortunately, the costs are continuously decreasing and it is becoming cheaper to travel with an electric drive. Similar to electric cars.
Nevertheless, electric motors are already more cost-effective in the long term for boats. The biggest cost driver is operating costs. Instead of several liters of gasoline (currently €1.70 per liter), only a few kWh of electricity (30 cents per kWh) are needed. In 2022, gasoline costs were repeatedly increased and there is no end in sight. In addition, there are also annual maintenance costs and the repair of wear parts (oil change, filters, etc.)
Installation of the electric motor on the inflatable boat
Mounting an outboard or stern drive is uncomplicated on the motor mirror, which is located at the stern of the inflatable boat. The attachment is made by means of clamping screws or bolts. Often, an outboard lock is also recommended. Depending on the weight of the motor, this is easy for motors under 11kW (15PS) and can usually be done by a layman.
The connection to the batteries is plug & play via cables for the outboard motors. With the cheaper stern drives, you have to connect the cables to the battery poles yourself. This is not difficult, but always to be enjoyed with some caution. Especially when used on the water.
