Special features of electric inboard engines
E-Inboard is available in different performance ranges. You will find all variants from 2 kW up to 150 kW (210 HP) power in our shop. Depending on your requirements, you will need about 1-2 kW power per tonne in displacement mode and exponentially more in gliding mode. Your inboard can be controlled via remote control or a fixed throttle in combination with a steering wheel. With existing shaft systems, the electric inboard can be easily flanged to the current shaft. The propeller can thus continue to be used, for example.
The Electric-Inboard are powered by an external battery which is connected to the electric drive. Here we recommend modern lithium batteries or AGM batteries for maritime applications, depending on the application. Besides, you will need a charger and solar cells for recharging are available as an option.
Electric inboard motors - What are the manufacturers?
Most boat owners are familiar with Torqeedo, with its bright orange logo. Torqeedo comes from Lake Starnberg in Germany. Torqeedo is the market leader in the field of electric boat drives and has already delivered more than 100,000 electric motors around the world.
Absolute hit in the field of shaft systems for motor boats is the company Kräutler from Austria. In addition, there are still very well-known manufacturers such as the companies Fischer Panda, Aquamot, E-Tech or RiPower. The manufacturers are known for high quality and have been producing e-drives for boats and ships for a small eternity.
Despite a market with many well-known players, there are also always great news. Torqeedo cooperates with the company WaterWorld from the Netherlands for the inboards up to 15 kW, for example. The price-performance ratio of the drives and also the quality and user-friendliness of the display or driving lever is ingenious and highly recommended.
Also edyn is a relatively unknown manufacturer, where the shaft systems go from 4 kW to 150 kW. edyn is also very well known for very modern outboards. Otherwise, there are still some manufacturers that may not yet be listed on the site. These include Bellmarine, Propel or greenstarmarine.
Advantages and disadvantages of electric inboard motors
On the one hand, electric inboard propulsions have the conventional advantages of an electric motor. The e-inboard is quiet, clean, and very efficient. Besides, the engines have much better handling, maneuverability, and more thrust in the lower speed range. E-Boat engines are also cheaper to maintain, safer than combustion engines and also environmentally friendly.
Inboard can only be (dis)assembled with technical skills. Furthermore, the drives are located inside the boat and not at the stern. This is both an advantage and a disadvantage. They are rigidly installed and in contrast to outboard, there is hardly any danger of theft. Moreover, the engines take up very little space in the interior and can also remain in the boat for wintering.
Many inboards can also be flanged to a Z-drive, such as an Alpha One. There are already electrical solutions for gliding boats, but these cannot yet compete with a combustion engine in terms of price.
On the one hand, there is a small disadvantage in terms of purchase due to the cost of installation. However, you have the advantage of a flawless appearance without any visible engine on your boat. And don't worry: We will be happy to assist you with the installation.
Installation of a shaft system
Inboards are especially common on medium to large boats and sailing yachts. The advantage of the wave systems with combustion engines is that the engines are much quieter than the outboard thanks to the insulation in the interior. The components of the electric motor and possibly the gearbox are installed in one housing.
The assembly is more complex than with an outboard and should usually be carried out by an expert. The boat should also be lifted out of the water, which may require a crane. The existing wave system can usually be reused. The inboard motor is mounted firmly in the hull of the boat. It is important to fit and align the new electric motor exactly. The assembly is also occasionally carried out by private hands. If you have 2 left hands like us, just let us know. We will find you a boat builder in your area free of charge, obtain cost estimates, and organize the assembly.
